We are identical twin sisters Justine and Toni, mummies to young children and creators of Kin and Kloth.
Being exceptionally close sisters, we share many of the same passions in life, one of which is for beautiful and timeless lifestyle items that are made lovingly, ethically and sustainably.
We have both spent much time in Turkey, holidaying and visiting family there. It was whilst there we discovered hammam towels otherwise known as pestamels and fell in love. Their practicality along with their beauty makes them the most charming towel around. It was when we tried to source some hammam towels that were traditionally made and organic that our journey then progressed onto our business venture.
After much research we uncovered that modern day hammam towels are generally mass produced on factory machines. Due to modern day consumerism and a throwaway attitude these cheaper factory towels have become the most popular option to purchase. The Turkish artisans using the traditional weaving methods have become virtually non-existent, apart from a few families and individuals left which are scattered around the south of the country. It’s some of these last remaining weavers that produce our truly authentic Turkish towels and throws, every piece made with love, integrity and exceptional quality.
Ultimately our aim is to educate people through our business about the importance of knowing where, how and who makes their day to day items they purchase either locally or from far away.
Kin & Kloth towels are all slowly hand-woven on traditional wooden shuttle looms by Turkish Artisans. Working with some of the last weavers in villages across Southern Turkey, they have a passion for their art and this translates into beautifully crafted pieces. Due to the speed of the traditional weaving process this means weavers can only produce towels in small batches. Each towel is priced to reflect the time taken, the intricacies involved in the design and to ensure all the weavers are paid a fair wage. We are proud to say all our towels are of exceptional quality and will outlive mass produced ones by years, even decades.
Unlike our towels most other Turkish towels are mass produced on factory machines and are coated with ingredients such as starch and wax, so they can be woven more easily. This process results in a far less absorbent towel which will not stand the test of time. Further to this, mass-produced towels are also commonly whitened with bleaches or coloured with synthetic dyes.
All our towels and throws are produced using only top quality GOTS certified organic cotton and the best quality linen. The threads are all spun in central Turkey using dyes and finishes that are GOTS certified organic.
Using organic cotton only is so important to us because it’s grown without the use of toxic pesticides or fertilizers. This means it’s better for the land it’s farmed on, for the workers farming it and for our general well-being and health. It will produce a much more absorbent, breathable, easier to clean and super soft textile product, which is much healthier for your skin.
